Conducting business through communicationsSo the Chicagoland area between February 1st and 2nd is experiencing one of the worst snowfalls of my (soon-to-be) 35 years on this planet. We’ve shut the doors (save to put the dog out), and settled in for the snow storm of the year.

What’s amazing is that, as long as we have electricity and cable, I can continue to do business with many of my clients thanks to technology. In fact, it’s more than just interacting on the phone (which, of course has its own perks, especially if you have the internet). You can interactively talk with your clients face-to-face via video, hold a conference call, or even teach a class all while in your PJs.

If you think you might lose sleep tonight about lost business, try these programs on for size. They each have free versions, and I can safely say that you can get some amazing work done from your office to not only your local clients, but to national and international business associates with the greatest of ease.

Skype: www.skype.com

This is a program which you download and which works across the internet. The face-to-face video chat is pretty stellar, there is an instant message function, and you can even share your screen. I often use this tool when working with a client and teaching him or her how to operate their brand-new website. You can also use Skype for regular phone calls for small fees, and you can conference call as well.

Sorry folks, you cannot video conference nor share your screen in conference calls yet. However, there are some pretty cool apps for your phone that make Skype a nice cozy alternative for basic phone conversations.

Free Conference Calls: www.freeconferencecalling.com

Just what it says it is. You can call into a long-distance number (make sure you have a good rate plan), have everyone dial the same number with a pass code, and you have yourself the making of a productive morning or afternoon.

Freebinar.com: www.freebinar.com

This is a free web-and-phone web-based seminar tool. While a little clunky, it has many of the same features that you’ll find in those $60/month packages. Again, there is a long-distance number to call, but you can share your screen, and even swap screens. Pretty awesome.

Mikogo: www.mikogo.com

Host a webinar or have a one-on-one training session with this nifty software. Their goal is to have you purchase their very cool BeamYourScreen software, but this product allows you to hold webinars and conferences with up to 10 people! Extraordinary! Like Skype, there is a safe program you must download and install, but it is cross-platform, and shows as being safe by my Norton Internet Security Suite.

Keep Moving Forward!
